think the Tottenham game was the worst we have played all season. The one game that really matters to West Ham fans and the team just simply turn up.
Right from the start of the game we just gave far too much space to Defoe, Lennon and Bale who were their three liveliest players. Bale, in particular, turned us inside out and this was all because we kept backing off from him. We gave him far too much freedom and he was able to run at us as much as he wanted. What I think we needed to do was hit him with a few a hard, crunching tackles in the first ten minutes just make him wary.
I can’t think of one player who had a good game we were poor over the whole pitch. We didn’t create anything for Carroll and we are missing that goalscoring striker or somebody with a bit of creativity. Nolan is supposed to be that link between the midfield and the strikers but he doesn’t have that extra bit about him to take on a couple of players and play a ball through. I know we have Benayoun, but he is currently injured and he isn’t the player he used to be when he was at the club the first time.
Anyway back to the game, I thought if we held out until half time we actually had a good chance of nicking the win but we conceded at the worst time possible and what an appalling defensive goal to concede as well. Defoe should not have got between the first two challenges from both players. If they couldn’t get to the ball they should have brought him down. Noble should have done a lot better and not let him cut inside as that is all Defoe does and finally Jussi should not have been beaten at his front post.
We should have also have stopped the other two goals that we conceded. The second was again poor defending and the third was simply our own fault for giving the ball away. I am glad Andy Carroll has got his first goal for us and now hopefully will lead to many more but I can’t really see where we are going to get all the goals from.
Even to me it seems like a stupid thing to say as we have started the season so well but we don’t have a striker who is just an out-and-out goal scorer. In the January transfer window I think we need to get another striker in somebody who can play and work up top with Carroll and play off the last defender. I have seen we have been linked with Darren Bent and I think he would be a great signing because he will always get you goals.
We have got a few more very tough fixtures coming up and I hope we perform better than what we did against Spurs otherwise it is going to be an extremely tough few weeks.
