Carroll needs to score more goals

After being sidelined with injury for a lengthy period, is the return of Andy Carroll just what we need and have been missing?

After a goal on his return to the West Ham first team which ensured a victory against a tough Swansea team everything was looking positive, however, a poor performance from West Ham against Aston Villa saw everything for West Ham and Andy Carroll slip back to what we have learnt this season – “ineffective”.

I think the signing of Carroll on loan in the summer was a signing that captured the entire imagination of all West Ham fans. Without doubt Carroll was a signing of intent by West Ham. An England international who in his first major season with Newcastle helped guide them back to the Premier League in the 09/10 season with a total of 47 games and 19 goals. During his loan spell at West Ham, Andy Carroll’s time has been a bit stop-start with him picking up a few injuries which have stopped him having a solid run in the team which can’t help. However, in my first paragraph I used the word ineffective for Carroll and I stand by that.

I expected a lot more from Carroll when he joined the club and I am sure a few other West Ham fans would agree. But before some West Ham fans get agitated let me explain. During his time with West Ham he has played 15 games with a return of only two goals, which by any means is poor for a striker. Yes, yes, like I said I know he has had a few injury problems at West Ham but he has still been fit for 15 games and only scored two.

There are also only really two noticeable games in which it could be said that Carroll has lived up to expectations which were against Fulham and Swansea. I am not totally against Carroll, I think he is a real handful for defenders in the Premier League and he is terrific in the air. Maybe this is the area that we should focus on with Carroll, instead of playing him up front by himself we should play with two up front which I feel would be more beneficial and would provide Carroll with a more effective role at West Ham.

I hope that I am wrong about Carroll and I hope he can regain some form and start to find the net and I hope he gets some luck with his injuries and can push us on and have a good finish to the end of the season.
