Tim Holland speaks to Terry Pitman, lifelong Everton fan, about staying above Liverpool, Leighton Baines leaving and the lack of transfer activity in January

How do you rate Everton’s season?

How do you rate Everton’s season?

I’d probably give us a B+. We did well at the start of the season and then started to lose our way a bit in the middle of the season. Fortunately the three wins in a row in January put us in the right direction and David Moyes quite rightly got manager of the month. The highlights were the wins at home against Spurs and Man City. Overall it’s been good and we can’t complain given how little has been spent on the squad. Losing out to Wigan in the FA Cup was very disappointing.

Are you still looking towards a place in the European spots?

I would love to see a final push for the Europa League spot but being a pessimist I can’t see it happening. As long as we stay above the other team from Liverpool I can’t complain!

Nikica Jelavic has had a tough time in terms of scoring goals this season. Do you think David Moyes will look to improve this area in the summer?

All strikers go through a tough time in their career and Nikica set the bar very high when he came from Scotland last year. I’ve got faith he’ll come good next year. In terms of strikers, it’s actually an area that I’m not worried about we’ve got Kevin Mirallas, Steven Naismith and Apostolos Vellios plus Anichebe has really stepped up this season.

Leighton Baines has been linked with a move to Arsenal and Man United. Do you think he’d move from Goodison?

I’ve got a feeling he will this year to try and keep his place in the England squad. He’s been part of a successful defence this year but if we don’t get further funding and progress then I can see some of our more coveted players leaving in the summer.

Leon Osman ade his England debut this season. Do you think this was deserved?

I think it was definitely deserved for his performance over the last few years. He has been such an essential part of our success but yet has been underrated and overlooked in equal measure. It’s just a bit disappointing that it took until he was 31 to get a call up.

David Moyes only signed one player, youngster John Stones in January. Do you think he should have signed some further reinforcements?

Let’s not take anything away from John Stones but yes I think if we’d have signed some midfielders in January then we’d be closer to the top four with only a few games left. I think that fans have been quick to jump on the defensive regarding the available funds but we could have at least dipped into the loan market.

Talking of David Moyes, he’s now been in post for over 10 years. Can you see a change in management in the near future?

I have heard the rumours that he is being lined up to replace Fergie at Man United and I wouldn’t begrudge him leaving in the next few years. He has never been backed.

Who should West Ham fans be wary of in the Everton when the club’s meet?

It has to be Marouane Fellaini for me – he’s been in good form this season and is quite rightly our top scorer. Anichebe has also been getting in the goals over the last few months.

What’s been your opinion of West Ham this season?

I think if anything you’ve over-performed. I was expecting you to be in a relegation fight come April but you’re comfortably in the top half of the table. I’m not a big fan of Sam Allardyce but he gets results and I think the criticism of your style of football is unfair given how direct we play sometimes.

Which West Ham players would you have in your squad?

Diame has looked very good for you and I’d like us to be in the hunt for him come the summer. Matt Jarvis has also surprised me with his ability especially his crossing. Tomkins for me looks like one for the future as well.

What’s your prediction for both clubs this season?

Everton 6th, West Ham 11th
