There has been a lot of talk about West Ham players ‘settling in well’ and ‘gelling’ but that’s a load of rubbish.
No new signing needs time to settle in. Football is the same whoever you are playing for, whether it’s Manchester United, West Ham or Birmingham.
Carl Jenkinson and Aaron Cresswell have been praised for settling in well but at Upton Park but the reason they doing so well is that they are good players. It’s as simple as that. They are playing the same position they’ve always played and they would’ve had the same impact at any club .
Good players adapt to a new club straight away. Look at Diafra Sakho and Enner Valencia, they have hit the ground running and the fact of the matter is West Ham are doing better this year simply because they have better players than before.
The only downside is that team’s like Aston Villa will now come to Upton Park and think a point is a good result. Managers will look at us and think ‘how do I stop them playing?’ It’s just like we did as Stamford Bridge last season. There is nothing we can do to stop teams doing that but instead we have to focus on moving the ball well and dragging players out of position. It’s a challenge but it shows how far we have come.
