One of the biggest talking points this season has been how West Ham United would cope if Winston Reid leaves in January. As we know the New Zealand international is out of contract at the end of the season and has been linked with a move to Arsenal. At the time of writing we are no closer to finding out what will happen but I would argue that the situation may not be as critical as many believe.
If, or when as the case may be, Reid departs the Hammers will obviously have to enter the transfer market for a replacement. But there should be no panic as James Tomkins and James Collins are more than a capable centre-back pairing. Collins in particular has been in fine form this season and, for me, was man of the match in the FA Cup win over Everton.
The Welsh international is an old fashioned defender. He doesn’t mess about with the ball but I’m sure he gives his teammates plenty of confidence. For the first time in memory West Ham have a strong squad so no single player is crucial.
