Newcastle United 1-0 West Ham: Irons finish last in Asia Cup

The Hammers enjoyed the lion’s share of possession but looked ineffective going forward

West Ham United’s Premier League Asia Cup campaign ended in defeat as they went down 1-0 to Newcastle United in the third-place play-off.

Japan international Yoshinori Muto scored the winning goal after 34 minutes in a match the Irons were surprisingly flat – although the hot and humid conditions did not help create a great spectacle.

West Ham dominated possession for long periods, particularly in the second half, but were unable to seriously trouble Newcastle’s Slovakian goalkeeper Martin Dubravka.

A Felipe Anderson header from Robert Snodgrass’s cross clipped the top of the bar while Javier Hernandez and Jack Wilshere also came close.

The Irons return to London on and will be joined by new signings Sebastien Haller and Pablo Fornals.

West Ham continue their pre-season schedule with a visit to Fulham next Saturday, before facing Hertha Berlin in Austria.

Pre-season will end with the visit of Athletic Bilbao to London Stadium on Saturday 3 August.
