George Parris: Aaron Cresswell shows left-back battle isn’t finished just yet

How do West Ham solve their left back problem? I’m not sure anyone has a definitive answer at the moment.

I’m surprised that leading up to the Manchester United game that people on social media were even debating with Cresswell or Ben Johnson should stand in for Masuaku with him serving a one-match suspension.

It wasn’t that long ago that Cresswell was in the England squad. You don’t just become a bad player overnight but confidence does play a huge part.

Up until his sending off, Masuaku had the starting berth and this was because of the way he plays and perhaps it suiting our side better as he is good going forward.

His defending at times leaves a lot to be desired. To me, if you are a defender you need to know how to defend. If you can add the attacking element and be good going forward, even better but the game has changed so much with the full backs now expected to almost offer more going forward than in defence.

As for Masuaku’s sending off, his tackle for his second booking wasn’t that bad but if you are on a yellow card, you don’t go into tackles like that.

Given the referee, Masuaku should have known better.
