Football was one of my few highs last year and I’m staying positive

I will never forget celebrating key moments at home

The lead up to the arrival of the New Year is always a time for reflection for me, and when thinking about my highlights of 2020, they were pretty much all West Ham related.

To have been able to watch all our games, especially when we’ve played well and secured some decent results, was a huge highlight for me.

With the year we had, to have missed out on watching our games once football resumed, would have really compounded my misery – and I’m sure yours too.

I always try to take positives out of every situation and whilst it was sad not to have been the stadium when Yarmolenko cut back inside to slot home the winner against Chelsea, or when Lanzini scored an absolute belter to complete the comeback against Spurs – I can still vividly remember celebrating at home, and I will never forget these moments.

It’s been great to see the partnership between Rice and Soucek blossom week in, week out, and it was wonderful to see Antonio terrorising defences before his injury – his performance against Norwich was particularly impressive.

I think I’m still in shock about our performances against Wolves and Leicester following two defeats against Newcastle and Arsenal when neither looked particularly brilliant.

I took a lot of positives from our performances against Man City and Liverpool and then enjoyed watching us ride our luck against Fulham, Sheffield United and Aston Villa in November.

We endured a dip in December but to emerge from games against Leeds, Palace, Brighton, Southampton and Everton without defeat suggests maybe we are starting to head in the right direction.

Here’s hoping we can take the FA Cup more seriously this season, and push on this month to see just how high we can finish in this extraordinary season.
