Former West Ham striker Dean Ashton has praised Jesse Lingard for the immediate impact he has had at the club and believes the 28-year-old, on loan from Manchester United, is a sure bet to make the Euros.
Speaking exclusively to 888 Sport, Ashton commented on Lingard’s fitness and determination since arriving at the Hammers.
He said: “I always remember players going out on loan, it was to get some game-time or to get over an injury. Or it was because the club wanted them out of the door, to be honest. But for Jesse Lingard to have the impact he’s had – to go from not having any football at Manchester United and pretty much being written off – to coming into the club with the fitness levels he’s shown is a testament to his dedication and commitment to his craft given the condition he’s in.
“He is clearly desperate to prove people wrong and since January nobody has been involved in more goals than Lingard. That is staggering.
“Clearly the environment and David Moyes knowing him and the camaraderie within the club has all helped him. But a lot has to be down to his attitude and rightly he was picked for England in the last squad.”
Ashton also believes that based on Lingard’s form, Gareth Southgate is certain to include him in his squad for the delayed Euro 2020 competition.
He added: “The others have to get back into the England side and play well because at the moment – right now – Jesse Lingard is in Gareth Southgate’s first team. Something drastic will have to change for that to be different. He’s already earned his spot back in the side and I think Gareth really likes him as a player and as a person.”
