Opposition View: ‘I’d take us staying up at the moment…’

Southampton have had a mixed start to the season, and West Ham are looking to continue their good form

11.02.15 - Southampton vs West Ham United - Barclays Premier League - Nathaniel Clyne of Southampton appears to handle the ball in the area under the challenge of Morgan Amalfitano.

Southampton have had a mixed start to the season, and West Ham are looking to continue their good form. Ahead of this weekend’s fixture, we caught up with Southampton supporter Ashley Jones.

How do you think your team will get on this season?

I’d take us staying up at the moment and I fear it could be a long season. I’m be optimistic and say 15th.

Is there a new signing that opposing teams should watch out for?

Tino Lvramento. He is such a talent already. He is so good on the ball and is also great with interceptions.

What are your thoughts on the departure of Danny Ings?

Nearly £30 million for a player with a year left of his contract and previous knee injuries is good business. He did well for us and kept us up so thanks to him, and move on.

But It appears to those on the outside that you are selling all your best players; What is your take on the reason behind selling your players? Is it a case of Southampton needing money or players wanting to leave?

Of course. It’s the Southampton way it seems. Covid hasn’t helped clubs at all and you see a lack of signings in this window from most but this situation isn’t ideal. It’s worth pointing out though that Vestergaard and Ings only had one year left on their contracts so I wasn’t surprised to see them leave.

Is there anything you think West Ham should improve on this season?

Lack of signings. No striker if Antonio gets injured. You need a striker and you should get Lingard back too.

As it’s Mark Noble’s last season for West Ham, do you have any vivid memories of him playing against your team?

He always seems to score penalties against us. He’s been a good leader for years and a great servant for West Ham.

What are your score predictions for our game against your side?

Finally; do you think your manager looks like Liam Neeson?

I haven’t heard that one but he has a few questionable outfit choices.
