Cottee predicts Antonio could become a 20-goal a season striker

The Boys of 86 star wants Michail to focus on scoring easier goals to take his game to the next level

Michail Antonio (WHU) at the EPL match West Ham United v Burnley, at the London Stadium, London, UK on 16th January, 2021. English Premier League matches are still being played behind closed doors because of the current COVID-19 Coronavirus pandemic, and government social distancing/lockdown restrictions.

Tony Cottee has hailed Antonio’s impact on West Ham with our all-action superstar looking unstoppable already this year with four goals and four assists in three games.

Prolific Cottee – part of our Boys of 86 side – is delighted the 31-year-old is leading the line for our beloved Hammers.

He gushed: ‘He’s a fantastic player. I remember when he first arrived and since then, there’s not many positions he hasn’t played for the club.

‘He’s like Roy of the Rovers. I bet Mickey was one of those lads at school who could play in all of the positions and he’d do well in goal.

‘I love watching him play because he’s so unpredictable. I think there are genuinely times where he doesn’t know what he’s going to do, let alone us fans, we’ve got no chance. And probably some of the players don’t know either.

‘I think his general game, he’s learning the position now. He’s big and strong, he holds off everyone.

‘You’re not going to get the ball off him. He’s as quick as anything, and what he brought to his game last season was the tap-ins.

‘It’s alright getting the sensational goals — like the fourth one at Newcastle — but you’ve got to get your tap-ins.

‘If you start getting the tap-ins — the sort of rubbish goals I used to get from two or three yards, you get 10 of them a season and you add the 10 he’s going to get because of his natural quality, you’ve got a 20 league goal a season striker on your hands which is exactly what we need.

‘Having said all that I really hope we just wrap him up in cotton wool, whatever it takes to get him through.

‘We’re going to have lots of games this year. We have to protect the guy. He’s a fantastic player for us.

‘At the moment we don’t have any other centre forwards at the football club which is absolute madness so we’ve got to keep him fit and make sure he’s available for all the big games.

‘Be that Premier League, Europa League, FA Cups, just do whatever we’ve got to do.’
