Opposition View: ‘I think winning the Europa League is a realistic target for Chelsea’

We caught up with Chelsea supporter Sam Gillam  ahead of our Premier League clash

Thoughts of Chelsea’s season so far Sam?

Not what we expected to say the least, after heavy investment in the summer for what seemed like Tuchel’s long term project, I think we have truly been let down as a fanbase by our performances this season. Obviously, being outside the European places is well below the expectations for our club. Once we allow Potter a few transfer windows, I’m sure his project will start to shine through in our performances.

Was sacking Tuchel the right option?

Absolutely not. I think I can speak on behalf of our whole fanbase that it is one of the worst decisions the club has ever made because of how backed Tuchel was in the summer and the things he had won for us. He was special.

So was appointing Graham Potter an upgrade or downgrade?

I think every manager is going to have a rough patch of form, especially when you’ve taken on your first Top six club as a manager and big things are expected. From face value, it seems like a downgrade because of recent performances, but I believe it is more the squad that is responsible for the current form.

Are there any players you’d like to see come in during the transfer window?

For me, a midfielder is desperately a position we need to fill at the moment, ironically Declan Rice would be the perfect fit. But I think that will happen in the summer. However, in this window I do think we might sign Enzo Fernandez, although I’m not a fan of the price tag.

One of your signings this summer was Raheem Sterling. He’s been a bit of a disaster at Chelsea hasn’t he?

Raheem showed signs of promise at the start of the campaign, he scored a few but now he has no more importance in the team than Pulisic or Ziyech for me. Another wasteful big money signing we have made.

What is a success this season for you?

I follow Chelsea home and away so no matter where we are in the league, I’ll be there, but expectation wise, I think Europa league is a realistic target this season, it will be very hard to get top four from this position and i believe it would be better to regroup and accept this season isn’t going to be a great one and plan ahead for next year with experimenting in the team.

Now I had to ask this question Sam. When we played at your stadium at the start of the season, did you think it was a foul on Mendy for West Ham’s goal to be ruled out?

It was definitely a soft one, and we see players go down in similar ways nowadays for such soft contact unfortunately. Bowen left his foot there and it brushed Mendy but I don’t think that was a foul. I do think the reason Mendy went down like that was because he knew you would score. Let’s be honest, we both have had VAR inconsistencies happen against us, and it’s something that definitely needs to be looked at.
