Opposition View: ‘How Brighton find these class players I’ll never know…’

We caught up with Brighton supporter Joe Blissett ahead of our clash at the Amex

Brighton will most probably beat us – as you are our bogey team – but what is it about West Ham that Brighton seems to get right every time?

I really don’t know. We just seem to find a way to get a positive result against you guys. Even last season, you looked destined to finally get a result over us, going 1-0 up and then having a second goal being ruled out by VAR before Maupay scored a worldie equaliser. I’m sure the time will come but hopefully not this season. Long may it continue.

And I have to ask; Was it a silly move for Graham Potter to go to Chelsea?

I really don’t think Potter was a good fit for Chelsea due to the quick turnaround of managers in recent years but Chelsea fans have to be patient. It took us three years to get to a consistent point under Potter.

Were you disappointed to see Potter leave?

At the time, I think every Brighton fan was shocked and a little worried with what the future would hold for us as we had come so far under Potter but we have kicked on now and look as good as ever. I think the Albion fans were more frustrated with him taking our entire back-room staff with him which left us so vulnerable, but things have settled now and beating them 4-1 at the Amex was a nice little bit of revenge.

Thoughts on Roberto De Zerbi?

I doubted him early as I think we went on a five or six game streak of not winning games but then we beat Chelsea and since then we’ve kicked on. I think the players fully commit to his ideas and will do anything for him so I’m really happy.

Marc Cucurella, Yves Bissouma, Leandro Trossard, Neal Maupay are just a list of players that have left you after your success last season and this season. Do you miss any of these players?

When these players left, a lot of us were worried, especially after Bissouma left. But we have proven time and time again that we have players ready to step up and fill the gaps. Trossard was a difficult one as it sounded like he fell out with RDZ.

So what is the secret behind Brighton’s success?

Honestly, it’s our chairman, Tony Bloom and all the background staff that come with him as well as top recruitment staff. How we find these gems people have never heard and make them class players I’ll never know but I’m all for it.

What is classed as a success for Brighton this season?

I think for a club like ours, success is building on last season so if we can get higher than 9th, I’ll be happy but of course we have one eye on those European places which would be unreal for us.
