Opposition View: “Leeds United need a rebuild and we need an identity again…”

This month we caught up with Leeds supporter Billy Appleton

Bubbles at the West Ham United v Chelsea EPL match, at the London Stadium, London, UK on February 11, 2023.

Do you think Leeds will be safe from the drop?

I think we will just miss the drop but it will be very tight. Each team has a tough run in, it’s just who can try and grind out results and I think we can do that.

Who do you think will get relegated?

I think Southampton, Forest and Everton will get relegated, it could be tight between Everton and Leicester though.

Do you think sacking Jesse Marsch was the right decision?

I think sacking Marsch was the right decision, I liked his ideas and what he was trying to do but our players didn’t fit that system. We are a wide attacking team and trying to play through the middle of the pitch just didn’t work.

What is your view on Javi Gracia?

There’s a divide with Gracia. A lot of Leeds fans have mixed feelings towards him but I like him. He’s brought a calmness to the team and not so much man-for-man like we have been. We still press but we do it at the right times, I think if he keeps us up some will still want to move him on.

Which Leeds United player has stood out for you this season, Billy?

Tyler Adam’s would’ve been my player of the season but we’ve missed him massively with the injury he sustained. My player of the season now has to be Rodrigo or Harrison. Rodrigo has really stepped up to the plate in Bamford’s absence and without his goals we would be struggling even more. Harrison has started to hit from at the right time which is what he and the club needed.

What would you change at Leeds going forward?

We need a rebuild and we need an identity again. Under Bielsa we had a style and everyone loved watching us. I couldn’t wait to watch Leeds every week and that feeling has seemed to die down. The owners need to decide who they want as manager and get them in early for a good pre-season.

How are you feeling going into the game against West Ham?

Nervous. I’m not keen on playing West Ham as I think you have a better squad than us. We never really do well in London either so I’m hoping for a repeat of last season.

Which three players from the current bottom three suit Leeds best?

I think Perraud, the left back from Southampton, would be a good signing for us as we’ve really struggled to find a solid left back. I would like to sign Onana from Everton, he would suit us. Tall, strong, aggressive and can run all day. Then I’d take Iheanacho from Leicester. He is a proven goalscorer who can play in behind or stay in the six yard box.
