Is there anyone out there who is looking forward to this season?

I shouldn’t be having these worries after the highs of Prague in June, and yet here we are

After winning the Conference League in June, we should have been looking forward to the summer and Moyes’ Boys kicking off a new season this month.

Instead, it felt like I was being bombarded on social media about the Declan Rice transfer saga, thanks to their algorithms, and with no new signings to get excited about, I’m worried. Is there any other club out there that would win a European trophy and go backwards?

It’s not just that we haven’t brought in one or two midfielders with the Rice money, it’s that we’ve also let Lanzini leave without getting someone in. Moyes and the club would have known for some time that Rice and Lanzini were going to leave this summer. It blows my mind that we got to August without signing a replacement for either.

I don’t know about you but for most of the summer, it also felt like more players were being linked away from the club than we were looking to sign. Winning a major trophy will always spark interest from other clubs for your players but it also gives you a much better platform to attract players.

I just don’t understand why we haven’t brought anyone in. I’m sure the likes of Paqueta and Aguerd are also scratching their heads too. I worry about us having another poor season in the league, and I worry we will have to sacrifice the domestic cups again, which I never really understand anyway but that’s for another column.

I worry we’ll struggle in our Europa League group, finish second and get dumped out by a Champions League club. I shouldn’t be having these worries after the highs of Prague in June, and yet here we are.
