Opposition View: ‘Brentford should be pushing for the European places but without Toney, we’ll fall short…’

We catch up with Brentford supporter Billy Taylor before our Premier League clash

General view at the West Ham United v Manchester City EPL match, at the London Stadium, London, UK on 16th September, 2023.

How do you expect Brentford to do this season?

Billy: Without Toney for half of it will impact massively but we have had an OK start to the season. Few draws which were underwhelming, but only two loses out of six I’ll take. At this moment in time I can see us coming top 12.

What will be classed as a success for Brentford?

Billy: A successful season for me would be breaking into the top ten and a nice cup run.

Can Thomas Frank take you to the next level?

Billy: I feel he’s shown his qualities and with the right team, we can cause upsets home and away. I like his recruitment and the way we approach games. Would the next level be competing regularly for European spots? I’m not sure if he can be that man for us just yet, but I’m happy with him right now and happy to let him continue on with what he’s doing.

Are there any new players that have excited you so far?

Billy: Yes our new signing Kevin Schade looks good and direct, he’s only 21 too so could be a great future investment. As well as the signing of Nathan Collins who already has a goal for us. He could be key to strengthening our defence.

Rumours about Ivan Toney’s future have come out recently. Do you see him leaving the club or do you think he will stay?

Billy: Toney is a top player who should take over from Kane as England’s 9 when he retires from international duty. Last season he was amazing, being 27 now, I think he is in his peak and would want to move to a club competing for trophies and playing in the top European competitions. So as much as it pains me I don’t think he will be here next summer.

How do you feel knowing he bet on Brentford to lose when he wasn’t in the team?

Billy: It’s a strange one and weird situation. He’s publicly slated Brentford before in videos when he’s been on holiday or whatever and betting against us, but the man scores goals for us and works hard for the team, so it doesn’t phase me. If he wasn’t scoring then I’d change my tune.

Ivan Toney recently appeared in the Diary of CEO podcast. What are your thoughts on that?

Billy: It was an interesting interview. I felt Toney came across very professional as he could considering what he had done. It was eye opening to finally get the truth and his point of view.

Score predictions for your game against West Ham?

Billy: 2-0 Brentford
