Opposition View: ‘Aston Villa want follow in the foosteps of West Ham and secure European glory…’

We catch up with Aston Villa supporter Stuart Southgate before our Premier League clash

Tomas Soucek (WHU) Boubacar Kamara (AV) at the Aston Villa v West Ham United EPL match, at Villa Park, Birmingham, UK on August 28, 2022.

How do you think your season is going so far?

Stuart: I didn’t think we would be challenging for the title in January if you asked me last season. We are a great team with great potential and that’s really showing. Hopefully we can keep this form up until the end of May.

What are your thoughts on Unai Emery as Villa manager?

Stuart: It’s incredible what a change of manager can do to a team. When you recruit a manager you can tell in the first few games if the players want to play under him. Emery has created a special bond with the team and you can see that bond on the pitch.

Villa are in the knockout stages of the Conference League. How far do you think you can go?

Stuart: I think we can go all the way for sure. West Ham proved they could and we want to follow in their footsteps and be the second English team on that trophy. It would be amazing to see Villa win a trophy, especially a European one.

Where are you hoping your side will finish this season?

Stuart: Anywhere in the top four, which I can’t quite believe I’m saying. We are in a great position and now it’s time to keep up the momentum until the end of the season and to not drop off form.

Villa are still in the title race; Do you believe you could go all the way?

Stuart: Never say never. However, there are some great teams around us in the table that we have to beat to be able to properly challenge for the title. We might struggle a bit as we have a few extra games with Europe and the cup so that will result in tired legs but never say never.

And Villa had a terrific home run form. What’s been beneficial to you in doing so?

Stuart: The manager, the players and most importantly us fans. The manager puts out a team every week where we read the team sheet and genuinely believe we can win the game. The players always put a lot of effort in. The fans are always singing and getting behind the team no matter the scoreline or what isn’t going in our favour.

Ollie Watkins has been incredible for Villa this season. Do you worry that someone might come in for him in the summer?

Stuart: If you asked me this a season or so ago, I probably would have said yes but now we have European football, hopefully next season as well, I don’t think he would want to leave as he might not be playing in European football next season.
