The net bulging at London Stadium, Leverkusen’s players celebrating, our players dejected, our fans applauding our men’s heroic efforts. It not only meant game, set and match and checkmate in our Europa League quarter final but it also, to me, felt like the end of an era.
Firstly the end of our European adventure but also the end of the Moyesiah. Our European adventures over the past three years have been incredible. I’ve loved watching us play on Thursday nights under the lights of London Stadium or on BT, TNT and Discovery+.
We’ve had one semi final, which we lost to the eventual winners, one memorable night in Prague, winning our first trophy for 40 years, and one quarter final losing to the German champions. Never did I ever think I’d see a West Ham side qualify for Europe, let alone thrive for three seasons.
We will miss out on a place for Europe via the league this season thanks to our poor form since January but we were, until recently, still in the mix, which is again something that I felt would only happen once in a blue moon. In years to come, we’ll look back on these years with fondness. We’ll remember the big moments. We’ll remember when we were absolutely massive on the continent.
I’ve enjoyed every game. I’ve soaked it all up. I never wanted it to end but it has. Thank you to our history makers, and thank you to David Moyes for making This summer will be huge for West Ham. It’s the start of the new chapter. I’m hoping for the best, fearing the worst!
