Finally a month to cheer about for West Ham Women after vital wins

Hopes are being raised after wins over Leicester and Crystal Palace kept our European quest alive

After recent months where the performances and results haven’t matched the quality of the team, we have finally had a month to remember. We have won three out of our last four matches and now sit 8th in the league.

The winning run started when we beat Leicester City at home to mark our first win of the season, when Viviane Asseyi scored just before half time. Then we went on to beat London City Lionesses in the League Cup which we now top our group and will qualify for the quarter finals.

We managed to win 4-1 on the day. I always said I wanted us to take the cups seriously this year so I’m very happy with the results so far, long may it continue. Our most recent win came in the league when we played London rivals Crystal Palace.

We saw ourselves two goals behind after 11 minutes and the game seemingly running away from us, but three goals before half time and two after, gave us a 5-2 win. Our top goal scorer, Asseyi, got herself on the scoresheet once again.

I am also very happy that even when we concede we find ways to get back into the game, I’m used to seeing the other team score early and dominate throughout. This shows there’s a lot of character and belief in the team, but saying this, scoring first and keeping a clean sheet would be nicer.

It may still be a bit early to say but I believe relegation is behind us now and we have some favourable games ahead that we can use to push us up into the top half of the table and maybe even the European spots. After a lot of talk from our directors and owners about how much we need to be pushing ourselves for Europe this season, they have invested well but it has been a bit of a sad start.

There’s still, however, many more games to go and we must keep the faith. I have stated before that we need to take the cups more seriously and believe we can bring silverware home. We are already doing as well as we can in the League Cup by being top of the group with one game to go.

We have entered the 4th round of the FA Cup where we will play Liverpool at home. It will be another hard start to the FA Cup, just like last season, but it’s winnable if we really go for it. With a bit of luck and if we play to our quality, we can do well in both cups this season.

Our last two fixtures before the Christmas break are Championship side, Southampton at home, in the League Cup and Aston Villa away who are two points below us in the table and have only won one game in their last six.

The Villians will not make it an easy game for us, but we must keep our confidence high and keep creating the number of chances we have to give us the all-important three points. This will be another vital month if we want any chance of securing Europe.
