‘Sending my love and prayers to Michail and Luther. Get better soon’

When these things happen, they really do make you realise that life is bigger than football.

Destiny Udogie (TH) Michail Antonio (WHU) at the Tottenham Hotspur v West Ham United EPL match, at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, London, UK on 19th October 2024.

Seeing what was left of Michail Antonio’s car after his crash before the Wolves game certainly put things into perspective. It was wonderful to see the footballing community unite on social media to show their love and support for our number nine.

And it was a nice touch by the club to auction off the ‘Antonio 9’ tops worn by the squad during the warm up and as the players entered the field against Wolves with proceeds being matched by the Board and split between the NHS and Air Ambulances UK Charity. It was clear quite early on that things were more serious for our all-time leading Premier League goalscorer than his other crash back in 2019 while delivering presents dressed as a snowman on Christmas Day but it would appear he’s doing OK.

It was great to hear the applause for Michail during the ninth minute of our game against Wolves and it really felt like it helped lift the team to put on a performance and get the result for Antonio. My hope now is that he fully recovers and that we do get to see him again in a West Ham shirt. It could be a long road to recovery for him.

Antonio’s crash came shortly after I heard about the collapse of Luther Blissett, who I had the pleasure of getting to know during a Bobby Moore Fund project to rebuild a school in South Africa in 2010. We’re fast approaching the 15-year anniversary of that experience and I really hope I’m able to catch up with him once more.
