Ghost of Christmas Present: ‘The road ahead is uncertain, but better days may lay ahead for us’

The Ghost of Christmas Past is meant to be jolly but we’ve not had much to be happy about

Bubbles in the air with Julien Lopetegui (West Ham manager) behind at the West Ham United v Manchester City EPL match, at the London Stadium, London, UK on 31st August, 2024.

I am the Ghost of Christmas Present, here to shed light on West Ham United, a club caught between the echoes of triumph and the shadows of inconsistency. Come with me as I take you on a journey, not back into the mists of time, but to the recent past and the present day. There are lessons here to be heeded, if only they will open their eyes and ears.

To the team of West Ham United, I sense danger. Last Christmas, you were riding high in the top half of the table. Arsenal and Manchester United were being put to the sword. You were the reigning European champions, and no-one was uttering the words, ‘but it was only the Europa Conference’.

But oh West Ham, how fortunes can change. You are struggling, conceding goal after goal. David Moyes, the man who brought you glory, has gone, with a different manager at the helm. I sense danger for you, West Ham: you are lost, confused, in the wilderness.

Speaking of which, ah, Julen Lopetegui. In the form of West Ham’s manager, I see a man who is walking a very fine tightrope. How the cold winds of the Premier League table are biting at your heels. Despite grand signings, there you are, a figure beleaguered, your team faltering in the wrong half of the table.

The fans’ voices ring out, questioning your tactics, your vision, your ability to lead them forward. In the present, you stand on uncertain ground. Your team flashes brilliance one day, but then struggles the next.

Beware the trapdoor, Julien Lopetegui. Beware the comfort of thinking you have time. You must build a winning team now, not only for survival but for something greater, for West Ham’s potential is vast, the weight of expectation heavy, and the price of failure high.

David Sullivan, look into my eyes, for I bring you truths from the here and now. You are no stranger to criticism, no stranger to the ire of the faithful who see their fortunes rise and fall with your decisions.

Their cries of frustration have been and continue to be loud, from last Christmas to this. Money has been spent, but results are dire. The road ahead, for you, is treacherous. The January window looms, with uncertainty swirling around the London Stadium, and I warn you: you have some difficult decisions to make.

You must make them for the good of the club, and not just to feather your pockets. Give the fans hope of a brighter future, for a house with a shaky foundation cannot stand, no matter how grand its walls.

Lucas Paquetá, the samba star who danced his way into the hearts of fans. Beware, for a shadow is hanging over you. The whispers of investigations are distracting you from the brilliance you can bring. This team needs your flair, your unpredictability, your spark. Do not let off-field matters dim your light.

And then there is you, captain Jarrod Bowen — the spirit of West Ham embodied in one man. You lead with determination and fire. You have given this team goals and inspiration when they have needed it most. And yes, your light has recently shone brightly for England too.

You, Jarrod, must continue to carry that torch, not just for yourself but for your teammates and for the fans who look to you as a symbol of hope. Your journey from humble beginnings to stardom is a story they hold dear, and you are proof of what resilience and hard work can achieve.

And finally, I turn to the fans. Long-suffering, loyal, and passionate, you are the lifeblood of this club. You have endured years of lows, to incredible highs, and everything in between.

From relegation battles to the ecstasy of lifting a European trophy, but now, once again back in the wilderness. You have stayed with the team, no matter what, and you have celebrated the heroes and mourned the departures. But I must warn you: patience will continue to be your greatest test.

The path ahead is unclear, and the going is tough. This club is still growing, still learning. Stand by the players, even when the road ahead is hard to see. For it is your faith that will sustain them through the storms, and your voices that will lift them in the moments of triumph yet to come.

And so, I leave you with this: the lessons are there for all to see, if only they will look. The road ahead is uncertain, but better days may lay ahead. West Ham United, heed my words. Decide wisely. Play boldly. Support fiercely.

This Christmas, take the lessons of the present and carry them forward, to ensure a brighter future in the new year to come.
