Something’s been put in the water at London Stadium, hasn’t it? It’s been a strange month. We’ve been up and down like a yo-yo – the win at Newcastle gave us hope to cling on to. With strategically placed former players in the stratospheric away end, all was jolly.
The Arsenal game, well, that gave us hope at points and then snapped it away like a hungry crocodile. We all had the ‘sacked in the morning’ line ready to rock at 4-0 and within a couple of minutes we wondered if the two goal turnaround had us being too hasty. Alas, it hadn’t.
Then came the Leicester game and we were left scratching our heads. How did we not win with 31 shots and 10 on target? Then came about an altogether surreal few days leading up to the win against Wolves, where our thoughts immediately turned to wishing Michail Antonio well after being very worried about his well being.
The circumstances surrounding the game seemed to bring out the team spirit again – something that has been distinctly lacking this season. We were still poor. Against better opponents we would have been left frustrated by another defeat, and probably now managerless.
But from a fan perspective, it was nice to see the genuine outpouring of support for a teammate. It gives us a sign that they do still get on – it’s just not clicking on the pitch. Bowen gave his all against Wolves. He generally always does, but even for him this season he’s looked frustrated.
He shone as a good captain and gave us the glimpses of the player we know him to be. He’s just a pure talent and we need to keep him happy…forever! Soucek’s joy at scoring and his post-match interview was good to see too. He’s one of the good guys of football, and I never fail to be delighted for him when he has a good day.
All this is well and good, but the win hasn’t left me feeling all that positive. I don’t feel like we’ve turned a corner, or we’re gaining momentum, or that Lopetegui has sussed it all out. It’s going to be a long festive period. I’m particularly looking forward to Liverpool to cap off the year and Man City to start the new one. Can you see my sarcastic face? And on that note, Happy Christmas everyone!
