ExWHUemployee: ‘It’s key we don’t make any more high profile mistakes after our summer flops’

We never tend to spend too much in the January window and I’m not sure this window will be any different

Players pre-match warm-up at the West Ham United v Manchester City EPL match, at the London Stadium, London, UK on 31st August, 2024.

So we go into yet another transfer window with uncertainty surrounding what our actions will be. A big factor will be the departure of players and how much money can be raised from those sales as a result.

The most likely players to leave are Rodriquez, Fullkrug, Ings and maybe Maxwell Cornet should Southampton decide to terminate his loan. Should decent funds be made, I then think we can expect some signings. The most likely option is to have players signed on loan.

I am aware that we have already expressed an interest in Brighton’s Irish international forward Evan Ferguson. It seems that whilst there is a lot of competition for his signature, it also appears that the Seagulls wish to hang on to the player till the end of the window at least whilst they assess Danny Welbeck’s current situation.

It is also said that we would like to bring a box-to-box midfielder to the club who can add some pace and physical presence. We have been looking at a couple of fringe players from some of the top six clubs including Carney Chukwuemeka and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall of Chelsea.

This represents an interesting month for us because the season is in danger of being increasingly underwhelming and with Bowen now out for the next two months, some new players could be the difference between a disappointing season to one with a bit more excitement.

We never tend to spend too much in the January window and I’m not sure this window will be any different. Past windows gone by have seen us make some quite costly and disappointing transfers.

The last one being the prime example where a completely unfit Kalvin Phillips turned up. Whilst on paper his signing made sense, he was continually at fault in games and didn’t add anything to our squad.

We also bought Danny Ings in the January window and whilst he does try whenever he plays, that transfer hasn’t done as well as planned either. It is essential after an indifferent summer window that we don’t make anymore high profile mistakes. It would also be good to see some of our youth players given a chance ahead of expensive quick fixes.

By the time I write my next article, we could have a new manager, a load of new staff and a handful of player departures and signings or nothing could have changed. This is the beauty of being a West Ham fan I guess. You never know what is round the corner.
