‘It’s time for Sullivan’s circus to leave town once and for all’

We need a new owner to come in and only then, after the ringmaster finally leaves town, will Noble’s words ring true

David Sullivan, Chairman of West Ham, centre, and Daniel Levy, Chairman of Tottenham Hotspur at the Tottenham Hotspur v West Ham United EPL match, at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, London, UK on 19th October 2024.

Who remembers when, after our final game the Boleyn in 2016, Captain Mark Noble told the crowd that we ‘ain’t run like a circus anymore, it’s run like a proper football club’? I wondered at the time how many in that 30,000+ crowd agreed with Nobes about how the then two Davids were running our football club, and if that sentence would forever haunt us.

Fast forward almost nine years and the events that have played out recently severely contradict what Noble had said. I feel other clubs would have gone about Lopetegui’s sacking in a very swift and amicable manner.

But in West Ham’s case, we had a manager taking training less than 24 hours after it became public knowledge that the club intended to sack him. There were cancelled team bonding dinners and postponed pre-match press conferences.

The way in which West Ham allowed this situation to be played out so publicly hasn’t only been a disgrace and an embarrassment but has been devoid of any class, empathy or consideration. Circus animals are treated better than the way West Ham have treated the Spaniard this week.

And what we’ve witnessed lately isn’t unprecedented, especially at West Ham. Sullivan has previous, yet he hasn’t learned from his mistakes. Who remembers the Avram Grant / Martin O’Neill saga?

Or recently when Ruben Amorim met Sullivan before Moyes’ future had been announced? We need a new owner to come in and only then, after the ringmaster finally leaves town, will Noble’s words ring true.
