Lopetegui has been a dead man walking for a while, just like some of the others who have been sacked lately. It seemed to be a weekly occurrence of will he or won’t he get the sack. I was away in Faro in the build up to him getting the sack so I didn’t see the constant news about it like you all endured.
But I just knew that he was under pressure and when I heard he got the sack, it wasn’t a major surprise. Things may have been a bit more different with a few more victories but it’s one of those where we’ll never know now. It’s done and we’ve all got to move on.
I think he never really knew what his side was or his best formation, those were the two main things. Most games, he kept changing from a four to a five, or from Paqueta playing to replacing him with Soucek.
Granted he had one or two injuries but as we know, all clubs have injuries. What also didn’t help is that we had a few sending offs too – even he picked up a few bookings.
As for Graham Potter, you hope he hits the ground running, have an instant impact and takes it from there. I know Graham from when I played at Birmingham and he was a young lad, and obviously I knew him from my time at Brighton when I was involved in the Women’s set up.
If he’s given time then hopefully he’ll turn things around. He got a lot of time at Brighton, all managers need it. One issue he needs to address quickly is scoring goals with Antonio and Bowen out because, as we all know, if you want to win games you need firepower and you need the variety up top.
Maybe we’ll dip into the market with it being the January transfer window and he might get some money to invest in another striker. Evan Ferguson has been linked with us and he’s a good young forward.
But as we know with all youngsters, there’s going to be a spell where they’ll have a dip in form and that seems to be where he’s at and he’s down the pecking order at Brighton. But I’m sure with a run of games, he might prove to be a shrewd bit of business for us.
