Graham Potter’s Chelsea Struggle: Why Stamford Bridge was the wrong fit

Chelsea fanzine CFCUK analyses the difficulties Graham Potter faced during his tenure in West London

Graham Potter (West Ham manager) at the West Ham United v Tottenham Hotspur EPL match, at the London Stadium, London, UK on 13th September, 2025.

Graham Potter seemed a nice enough guy but was totally the wrong fit for Chelsea. He had no experience of Champions League or Europa League football and Chelsea were just a club that was too ‘big’ for him.

The Early Promise and the Brighton Nightmare

His Chelsea side was undefeated in his first nine games in charge, but saw Chelsea smashed and totally outplayed on his return to Brighton, his former club.

An Oversized Squad and Owner Interference

His tenure at Stamford Bridge wasn’t helped by having an oversized and unbalanced squad imposed upon him by the new American owners. They bought the players themselves and in some cases, choosing those who played, totally undermining the role that Potter had been hired for.

The Turning Point and the End of the Road

However, the aforementioned defeat to Brighton at the Amex seemed to totally knock the confidence of Potter and the squad. From the moment of that 4-1 defeat, it was downhill from there, and the writing was on the wall in six-foot high letters that his time at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea manager was limited.
