There are some months where I sit down to commission the copy for the next issue of this magazine and it’s a bit of a struggle. But then in a matter of days, as is usually the way of West Ham, and just like buses, you get two or three things happen.
A Busy End to January
The end of January was a prime example of that. We had the arrival of Evan Ferguson on loan from Brighton and the return of James Ward Prowse from his loan at Forest. There was also a return in form from Paqueta, a couple of Academy players getting game time and the departure of Steidten and suddenly the issue started to take shape – well, certainly in my mind.
The Graham Potter Era
It was incredibly interesting to read what Brighton fans made of Potter’s time with them, his departure to Chelsea and their thoughts on him now. I must admit that it did fill me with a bit of dread about the short term and the football we may endure under Potter.
Honouring Alan Dickens
This issue also felt like one dedicated to Alan Dickens, who is our big interviewee this month. But his time at the club also features in Brian Penn’s playmaker piece and Robert Banks’ deep dive into John Lyall’s time as West Ham boss. I’d like to say it was all part of my master plan but it was a coincidence that I only noticed after subbing these three articles seemingly one after the other.
Looking Toward Survival
I do hope that from now until May, we’re only talking about positive things happening at our club. I could really do without us being dragged into a fight for survival because I’m not sure we’re equipped for the battle.
