Will we ever get another Spring like we’ve enjoyed before?

As we enter March without the distraction of continental football, we look back at the glory of Sevilla and Lyon versus our current mid-table reality

In recent seasons, March and April have been incredibly exciting months for us, arguably the best months of my time supporting West Ham. We’ve still been in the thick of European action and we’ve enjoyed some incredibly memorable nights at the London Stadium.

The Golden Era: From Freiburg to Leverkusen

Last season we saw off Freiburg in the Round of 16 in the Europa League before giving Leverkusen a run for their money in the quarter final. In March 2023, we saw off AEK Larnaca in the Europa Conference League Round of 16 before defeating Gent in the quarter final on our way to European glory in Prague.

The Nights That Defined Us: Sevilla and Lyon

But arguably the best was in 2022 when we beat Sevilla in the Europa League Round of 16 before dismantling Lyon away from home in the quarter finals to make it to the semis.

A Different Feeling in the Air

In each of those seasons, there were fans of other Premier League clubs that were safe from relegation but not close enough to the European spaces who felt like they had nothing to play for or look forward to and had pretty much just given up on the season, almost wishing for time to speed up so that it could end.

The March 2025 Outlook

This is where my head is at right now. Whilst it’s great that we’ve been able to pick up some points to avoid us being dragged into the relegation battle, I really can’t see us moving much further up the table. I know the league is tight this season and that you only need to look at Brighton at what impact a run of wins can have, but if anything, I think we’ll end up with Moyes’ Everton above us.
