Opposition View: ‘Moyes is not a long-term fix, but right now, Everton needs stability more than anything’

We catch up with Everton supporter Steve Ward to discuss the return of the "Moyesiah" and the emotional move from their historic home

David Moyes (West Ham manager) at the West Ham United v Liverpool EPL match, at the London Stadium, London, UK on 27th April, 2024.

How does it feel to have David Moyes back?

Steve: It’s a bit surreal, to be honest. Moyes gave us stability for over a decade, and while things have changed massively since he left, there’s a sense of familiarity about him coming back. Some fans are happy because he knows the club, others aren’t convinced because football has moved on since. Either way, he’s got a big job on his hands.

What do you think David Moyes can bring to Everton?

Steve: Discipline and a proper defensive setup. We’ve been far too easy to beat at times, and if there’s one thing Moyes knows how to do, it’s making a team tough to break down. He’ll also get us working hard – Evertonians expect fight and passion, and that’s exactly what he’ll demand.

Do you think David Moyes is the answer to your problems?

Steve: He’s not a long-term fix, but right now, we need stability more than anything. If he can keep us up, get us solid at the back, and bring back some of that old-school Everton grit, then he’s done his job. The bigger picture, though, is whether we can finally get our recruitment and structure right, because that’s what’s killing us.

You have never been relegated so are you feeling safe under Moyes?

Steve: Not yet. We’re still too close to the drop, and the league is unpredictable. Moyes should make us harder to beat, but we need to start picking up points fast. We’ve survived by the skin of our teeth the past couple of seasons, so I’m not getting comfortable until we’re mathematically safe.

This is your last season at Goodison park. What is your favourite memory?

Steve: So many to choose from, but that win against Bayern Munich in ‘85 has to be up there. The atmosphere that night was electric – proper Goodison. More recently, the 3-2 comeback win against Crystal Palace to keep us up in 2022 was unbelievable. Goodison under the lights, backs against the wall, and a proper roar from the crowd – nothing beats it.

Are you looking forward to moving stadiums?

Steve: Mixed feelings. Bramley-Moore Dock looks incredible, and we need to move forward as a club, but Goodison is home. The atmosphere there is unique, and it’ll be emotional saying goodbye. Just hope we’re still a Premier League club when we make the move.
