Opposition View: ‘Wolves fans can’t help but wonder if West Ham pulled the trigger too soon’

We caught up with Wolves supporter Charlie Harrison to discuss Julen Lopetegui’s short-lived West Ham tenure, the disciplinary struggles of Matheus Cunha, and the survival race at Molineux.

Julien Lopetegui (West Ham manager) at the Tottenham Hotspur v West Ham United EPL match, at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, London, UK on 19th October 2024.

What were your thoughts on West Ham sacking former Wolves manager Julen Lopetegui?

Charlie: It was a strange decision especially given how many games he had been given before the sacking. He’s a talented manager, and I think he could have done good things at West Ham. I can’t help but wonder if they pulled the trigger too soon, but sometimes that’s football, isn’t it?

Rollercoaster Form at Molineux

How do you feel about your side’s performance so far this season?

Charlie: It’s been a bit of a rollercoaster for Wolves. We’ve had some decent performances but also some frustrating results. The team shows a lot of promise, but consistency has been an issue. We’re competitive in most games, but we need to convert chances into wins more often.

Standout Stars and Disciplinary Woes

Who has been the standout player for you this season, and why?

Charlie: Matheus Chuna has been crucial for us. Scoring and assisting goals he’s a big part of our team and it’s vital that we keep him for next season because he has a lot of potential, but his discipline has been a major concern. It’s frustrating to see him get sent off so often because his talent is undeniable. He needs to work on his decision-making and temperament, as we can’t afford to play with 10 men. If he can sort that out, he could be a real asset.

Life Under the Current Manager

What do you think about your style of play under the current manager, are you enjoying the football being played?

Charlie: I think the style of play under the current manager is improving. It’s a more dynamic and pressing style compared to the more conservative approaches in previous seasons. At times, it’s exciting, but we still need to work on controlling games better. I like the direction we’re heading in, though.

January Business: Enough to Survive?

Do you think the club strengthened enough for the second half of the season during the January transfer window?

Charlie: I think the club did well to bring in a few key players. There’s still room for improvement, especially in attack, but I believe we strengthened enough to survive. However, it would have been nice to see more reinforcements in the final third.

The Survival Race

How do you view Wolves’ current position in the Premier League standings?

Charlie: We’re in a tough spot but I think we have enough quality to stay up. We just need to be more clinical in games. If we can maintain a solid defence and get the attacking side right, we should comfortably avoid relegation. The three teams in it now are the ones going down in my opinion.
