Could this Premier League season go down as the most boring in its history? The bottom three have been cut adrift for such a long time and I’m calling it now, Ipswich and Leicester will join Southampton in being relegated this month. I can’t recall that this has ever happened before in the Premier League but all three have been so poor that they’ll also go down with the lowest combined points of relegated clubs.
Southampton are in real danger of falling short of Derby’s 11 points at the end of the 2007-08 season and taking that unwanted crown of worst points total in Premier League history. West Ham, Everton and Wolves have all had difficult seasons – along with Spurs and United who are both still fighting for European silverware – but I never truly felt that any of them were in any real danger of fighting for survival heading into May.
A Lack of Competition at the Top
As for the title race, Liverpool will win it but not by blowing the other title challengers away, they’ve just not had any competition. The only thing left to be decided is who’ll be playing in Europe next season and that is probably where the only good story remains.
The Nottingham Forest Fairytale
What Nottingham Forest has achieved this season has been remarkable. It feels very similar to when we finished sixth a few seasons ago. But whereas we fell apart in the latter stages, Forest have seemingly found another gear and a way of grinding out results. Should they get into the Champions League, I’ll wish them all the best because they’ve totally deserved it. I just hope that I’ve not jinxed them now.
Hoping for a Manchester City Stumble
I’d also love it if Man City have another stumble and the likes of Villa, Fulham and Brighton can all put runs together that ensures that there will be no European football at the Etihad.
