Graham Potter and the quest for a new claret and blue identity

As the Hammers look toward a massive summer transfer window we assess the impact of youth breakthroughs and the return of James Ward-Prowse

Graham Potter (West Ham manager) at the West Ham United v Tottenham Hotspur EPL match, at the London Stadium, London, UK on 13th September, 2025.

Since Potter has come in, we have gained 12 points and won only three games. But is that all his fault or can you only really tell when he gets to bring in some players that he wishes?

The first thing he did was bring back James Ward-Prowse, which even though I’m still not sure he was the answer, he has definitely played better than Carlos Soler and Guido Rodriguez in that position. Also with the amount of lineup changes we have had over the last six games, it does show that Potter hasn’t managed to find a team he is happy with, which just confirms that a big transfer window is heading our way.

Predicted Departures and the Soucek Dilemma

There are also a few players I believe will leave which could give us a bigger budget for next season. These players include Mohammed Kudus (which would be a huge payout), Vladimir Coufal, Konstantinos Mavropanos, and potentially Tomas Soucek.

With Soucek I still see him in our plans and I really don’t want to see him go, especially to another Premier League team, even if David Moyes is in charge. But if we can get £30 million for him and Potter has made it clear he doesn’t see him starting anymore then I would accept selling for that but I still don’t want it to happen.

The Breakthrough of Ollie Scarles

One big plus since he has come in is we have seen Ollie Scarles really make his breakthrough into the first team. Potter has made it clear he will give the youth team players that deserve it a chance and that is really refreshing to see. We have always been known to create many good young players but it has seemed recently none ever got the chance to showcase their quality and now they may have just been handed a bit more belief.

Backing the Vision for Europe

I’m a strong believer that Potter will do well for us and get us back into Europe, I just hope he gets the players that he wishes for in the summer. We are very known as a club to have our favourites written down on who we want to get then seem to never get them over the line. I just hope if we really want to back Potter for the long run, then we bring in the players he wants.

As a manager, he also isn’t known to bring in many expensive players, especially not all at once so there is really no reason not to bring in the players he wants if we can get them for a reasonable price. This time next year I really hope we are in a European spot, especially now we have an extra European spot going forward which means there’s a high chance of eight Premier League teams making it to Europe.

I don’t think us West Ham fans really care which European competition we get. Of course Champions League would be the ultimate dream but I’d happily relive that Conference League campaign again. I honestly believe if we get our signings right and we back Potter going forward, we can have a very good season next year and see us competing for Europe yet again. But for now we just need to get through the remaining games and try to build some confidence with the players we will keep for next season.
