Opposition View: ‘The build-up play is still brave at Brighton, but there’s a touch more pragmatism now’

To get the lowdown on the Seagulls' evolution, we caught up with Brighton fan Talia Morris.

What are your impressions of Brighton’s new manager – are you seeing continuity or a clear shift in style post-De Zerbi?

Talia: It’s a bit of both, honestly. The build-up play is still brave, but there’s a touch more pragmatism now – less high-risk, more control. It’s not De Zerbi-ball, but it’s still Brighton through and through.

The Midfield’s New “Absolute Gem”

Which new signing has impressed you the most this season at Brighton and why?

Talia: Carlos Baleba’s been a standout – he stepped into some big shoes and looks like he’s been here for years. Composed, physical, and fearless on the ball. Absolute gem.

The Rock at the Back

Who’s been Brighton’s most underrated player so far in 24/25?

Talia: Jan Paul van Hecke. He’s quietly been rock solid at the back, and his reading of the game has gone up a level. Doesn’t always grab headlines, but he’s crucial.

Giant-Killing at the Amex

What’s been the highlight performance or match of Brighton’s season so far?

Talia: Beating Chelsea, Tottenham and City at home, Man Utd away the list goes on. I can’t pick one.

Gelling the Defensive Unit

Are you concerned about defensive stability this season, or do you think the backline is improving?

Talia: We’ve had shaky moments, but the backline’s starting to gel. Injuries haven’t helped, but there’s definitely improvement, especially with how we’re defending as a unit.

Looking Toward the Window

Looking ahead, what’s your dream realistic signing for Brighton in the next transfer window?

Talia: I’d love to see us bring in a dynamic right winger – someone like Johan Bakayoko from PSV. Young, fast, technically gifted, and fits the Brighton mold perfectly.
