After watching the Women play over the last few months, I am gutted that the season is about to end.
I believe if we played another 10 games against anyone in the league, we would be positioned in the European places.
We finished the season 9th on 23 points but it was not that long ago we nearly put ourselves in a relegation battle.
In the last seven games we collected 12 points whilst playing, Tottenham, Manchester United, Manchester City and Brighton at home and Chelsea, Arsenal, Crystal Palace away.
At the start of the season I would have predicted six or seven points out of the fixtures.
We were also the only team to gain a point at Kingsmeadow this season. If we can carry this form into next season, I really believe it will be a season we will remember.
Shekiera Martinez: The Golden Boot Contender
Shekiera Martinez was close to winning the golden boot after being nowhere near, she picked up six goals in her last few games, which put her tally onto nine.
Manchester City striker Kadija Shaw’s 12 goals was enough with Alessia Russo close on 11.
It is also worth noting that Martinez only played 10 games this season whereas Russo played 18 and Shaw 14.
If she’d had more games, she would have been the first West Ham women’s player to win it.
Breaking the Trend of Selling Stars
A comment I have made consistently throughout my recent articles is that we are known to always sell our best players or they end up leaving on a free.
In the last three seasons this has been the case, but I’m starting to believe this transfer’s window will be different.
Reports suggest we are offering a few of our big players including Vivianne Asseyi, Riko Ueki and Katrina Gorry new contracts.
Martinez only joined us in the summer and signed a three-year contract and I really hope we don’t let her go, but I know many top clubs are keeping an eye on the 23 year old.
Building Foundations Under Skinner
One member of the club who has signed a new contract extension is manager, Rehanne Skinner.
She has really got these players playing and over the last year and a half she has built her foundations and being a West Ham fan it’s starting to look very promising around the club.
