It’s here, it’s finally here – the end of the season. There have been a few big talking points in the last few weeks, all with a view to looking ahead to the new season. Firstly, there are the departures we know about – Fabianski, Coufal, and Cresswell are all heading out the door, with emotional goodbyes. I think it’s fair to say, all players we will remember fondly. Not necessarily the best we’ve ever had, but definitely committed to the cause and part of some memorable moments.
Fabianski: The Iron Man Between the Sticks
Fabianski has become this season’s oldest Premier League player, and with his wealth of experience he’s been between the sticks for 200 plus games for the Hammers, which is not to be sniffed at. He’s had his moments, made mistakes and been through some rough patches with injuries and form – but as part of this team for seven seasons, he’s been there, done that and got the silverware.
Eleven Seasons of Aaron Cresswell
Cresswell has also been a fan favourite for a staggering 11 seasons. Sometimes I think we take him for granted because of that. With 311 league appearances and 114 wins under his belt, he’d become part of the furniture. He’s seen managers come and go, played in more than one home stadium and been through the best and worst times. With no testimonial to his name, he deserves something better than this season to go out on.
The Coufal Family Legacy
Coufal has paid us the ultimate compliment upon his exit, by enrolling his son in the Academy. A true sign that he knows that the heart of this club is wholesome. It’s hard to imagine Soucek without Coufal – they’ve both been integral parts of this team since they joined, and again provided so many memories for the fans. Oh, and Danny Ings is going too.
The Paqueta Enigma and the Rumour Mill
Of course, now the rumour mill starts around other players, and keeps turning until the close of the transfer window. Will we see Paqueta again next season? Early indications say it’s unlikely. He has clearly been a shadow of his former self this season, and the ongoing investigations into his betting behaviour have taken a toll on him. It’s sad to see this come to the fore so publicly. He’s undoubtedly one of the most talented players the London Stadium has seen, we’re sorry we didn’t get his full potential out of him. Onwards and upwards. See ya’ later 24/25!
