Ten seasons later: Why I fear a relegation battle at the London Stadium

Reflecting on a decade at Stratford and six managers (from Bilic to Potter), our Editor-in-Chief admits why 'scrapping for survival' should now be considered a successful season.

General view at the West Ham United v Tottenham Hotspur EPL match, at the London Stadium, London, UK on 13th September, 2025.

Can you believe we’re rapidly closing in on a decade at the London Stadium? Because I can’t. They say time flies when you’re having fun but I’m sure you’ll agree – European adventures aside – it’s not been a whole heap of fun at our new home. It all still feels news to me. It still feels like we’re still working our way through the list of improvement jobs we all have when we move into a new home. It was only when I was commissioning the copy for this issue that I realised this is our tenth season in Stratford. It blew my mind.

The Managerial Merry-Go-Round

I can still remember saying farewell to the Boleyn like it was yesterday. I can still remember Antonio scoring against Bournemouth at our first game in our new home. But, I guess, since then, we’ve had Bilic, Moyes (twice), Pellegrini, Lopetegui and Potter at the helm. Having said that, in modern football, some clubs go through that many managers in a season. This summer has felt like it’s absolutely flown by. I think the World Club Cup and Women’s Euros has made me feel like I’ve not really had a break from football, goodness knows how the Chelsea players feel after their success in the US.

The Editor’s Honest Outlook: Scrapping for Survival

I’m usually an optimist. I’m usually the person saying everything will be OK but I feel like, over the years, West Ham has drained this spirit from me. Right now, I’m really worried that we’ll get dragged into a relegation battle. For me, anything other than scrapping for survival should be considered a successful season. I cannot see us being anywhere near the European places come the end of the season but, as always, I’m happy to be proven wrong.
