What does success look like for you in this upcoming season?

Marcus: Finishing in the top four again. We’ve proved we can do it so staying competitive in both Europe and the Prem is the next step.

Who’s the one player Villa can’t afford to lose this summer?

Marcus: Keeping hold of Ollie Watkins is absolutely vital. He’s the heartbeat of our attack and gives us a cutting edge. If he stays fit and firing, we’re in every game.

But what’s going on with Emiliano Martínez?

Marcus: Martínez isn’t going anywhere unless someone pays big. United tried a loan and Villa shut it down fast. He’s vice-captain, under contract till 2029, and still one of the best in the world. We’d be mad to let him go.

Is there a sense of pressure now that expectations have shifted from underdogs to contenders?

Marcus: Massively. We’re not the surprise package anymore. Every club knows what we’re about, and that means we need to be even better. The pressure’s on but that’s a good thing.

How do you think Villa compare to traditional top six clubs going into this season?

Marcus: We’re in the conversation now. The squad might not be as deep as a City or Arsenal, but tactically and in terms of belief, we’re right there. It’s about consistency now.

Who was Villa’s player of the season in 24/25 and can they go up another level this season?

Marcus: Ollie Watkins, without question. He was brilliant last season and if he can keep that level going in Europe, he’ll finally get the respect he deserves on a European stage.

Unai Emery delivered Champions League football last season. How confident are you in him taking Villa to the next level in 25/26?

Marcus: 100% confident. He’s been here before, he knows how to rotate, how to prepare. If anyone can manage this next step without us dropping off domestically, it’s Emery.
