Opposition View: Palmer is the main man, but mentality must improve

Chelsea supporter Daniel Whitmore gives his verdict on the Club World Cup, the squad's need for experienced leaders, the departure of Noni Madueke to Arsenal, and why the Blues need to fix their mentality.

Chelsea won the Club World Cup over the summer but does it actually mean much when more people reportedly watched Man United vs West Ham pre-season game? Is it something to brag about or just a shiny distraction?

Daniel: It’s nice for the trophy cabinet but let’s not pretend it’s some elite legacy moment. Most fans barely noticed it happened. The fact a pre-season game got more views says it all really. Bit of a flex, but more of a footnote than a headline.

Do you think Chelsea finally have a settled squad, or does the summer window still need some key additions?

Daniel: More balanced than we’ve been in years, but we’re still a couple of leaders short. Need a proper midfield general and someone with experience to anchor this young group.

Can Cole Palmer build on his breakout season and become the club’s main man in 25/26?

Daniel: Absolutely. He’s got that swagger and composure – feels like he thrives under pressure. If anyone’s going to carry us this year, it’s Palmer.

As for a Chelsea departure this summer, what were your thoughts on Noni Madueke joining Arsenal?

Daniel: Mixed feelings. He’s got talent, but wasn’t consistent enough. If he thrives there, fair play but I won’t lose sleep over it.

Are you confident in the current striker options at Stamford Bridge, or is that still a concern?

Daniel: Still a concern. We’ve been crying out for a reliable No. 9 for years. Until someone steps up consistently, it’s always going to hold us back.

Do you think Stamford Bridge still gives you a true home advantage?

Daniel: At times, yes when the atmosphere clicks, it’s still electric. But it’s nowhere near the fortress it once was. Too many quiet games last season.

What’s the one thing Chelsea must fix this season to get back to being title contenders?

Daniel: Mentality. We’ve got the talent, but not the toughness. Too fragile in big moments – we need to learn how to grind out wins again.
