Lucy’s Last Word: Can Forest relief banish the Ghosts of relegation seasons?

From a 'shaky start' and the brutal Chelsea humbling to the crucial 3-0 win over Forest, we trace West Ham's tumultuous August and the desperate need for September momentum

It hasn’t quite gone to plan has it? The start of the season that is. Losing on the opening day to a newly promoted team didn’t exactly instill any hope or excitement for the season.

Six minutes into the Chelsea game, we saw the light; Paquetá. Here he was to save our season and score a cracking opener against Chelsea. It’s just a shame the five goals that followed were all put into our net.

Then came some more hope. To go 2-1 up from going behind in the EFL Cup at Wolves was a buzz, one with Paquetá on the score sheet again. No. We conceded two past 80 minutes and got dumped out. Cue a frustrated Bowen in an altercation with fans. This has horrible feelings of seasons gone by, relegation seasons to be precise.

The Forest Breakthrough: Relief and Enjoyment

We then headed to the Forest Ground, could we walk away with a 0-0 here and take the point? Better again. Three goals, three points.

The elation from this game was probably more than it deserved. Maybe it was just relief for us, turned into something more by our ability to run away with ourselves, against our better judgement. Bowen, Paquetá and Wilson on the score sheet, just who we would’ve wanted to be scoring.

That game felt how football should feel. Not a walk in the park, but an enjoyable end to perseverance.

Building Momentum for September

I’ve already used the work ‘momentum’ in this piece, but that along with confidence is a cliched advantage to a season. Putting together a run of results now is not easy, but stranger things have happened. A bit of team spirit and belief goes a long way.

If we walk away with five points from September, we can build. We’ve got the foundations, it’s just the bricks that need laying in the right order.
