West Ham’s biggest challenge: Can Nuno Espírito Santo fix the mentality crisis?

The Hammers are fighting against the tide after the Potter failure. We argue why Nuno's 'no-nonsense' attitude and focus on passion is the only way to save a struggling squad

As I type this, I’d argue that as a club, we are embarking on our biggest challenge in recent history. Not only do we need to completely reshape our results, but our mentality too. The question is; How have we got here and is Nuno the man to save us?

The Stark Contrast: From Europe to Turmoil

Previous seasons have seen disappointment in our ability to push onto the next level, but we now find ourselves in a situation where whichever direction you look, we need to improve. It’s a stark contrast from winning the Conference League in 2023, or the seasons that followed where it felt as though a few reinforcements could result in progress.

Just five games into the season, we have had to part ways with Graham Potter, despite having owners that typically give head coaches time, which is a sign of how our fortunes have in fact, faded. We’re no longer taking a somewhat successful team in Europe and attempting to strengthen them. We’re taking a side that is struggling in every way possible and trying to get back towards European spots.

Fighting Against the Tide: The Problem Defined

I’d compare it to fighting against the tide. We have a disorganised side, a lack of momentum, players with no confidence and an angry fanbase. But our secret weapon? We’ve brought in a fiery Head Coach who we hope will bring the passion back out of the players.

There are two things that will win a game on the pitch – talent and attitude. Some teams lack the technical quality or skill level, but their ability to take every opportunity and never give up can make all the difference and get them three points. We have a squad that, on paper, should be performing a lot better than they are. My hope is that Nuno will reignite the passion within the players that we have on our books and remind them what it means to play for West Ham.

Nuno’s No-Nonsense Message to the Squad

Nuno’s no-nonsense attitude towards underperforming players has been evident from the moment he joined, choosing to leave Ward-Prowse out of his plans entirely. But these are the decisions that make me feel it’s possible to turn things around. Alongside making a change that will speed up our midfield, I’ve no doubt that Nuno’s selection was partly designed to send a message. If you’re not helping us win, everyone is replaceable.

Perhaps that is the way to go. We’ve tried the calm and collected approach with Potter, but with heads dropping so easily and a limited amount of time to pull away from the relegation zone, we have everything to play for.

The Bumpy Road Ahead

The upcoming games will be telling, showing how much Nuno can make a difference, as well as how many of our issues are a lot deeper. My feeling is that Nuno will be able to get us back to a decent level of play. Chances are, we’ll see things plateau with the new manager bounce wearing off, a limited squad and a long time until the January transfer window opens. But if we can get a few wins under our belt, things will start to feel very different.

So here’s to Nuno’s mentality of giving the opposition hell and reminding the players that they need to fight and give fans reasons to get off our seats. Hold on tight, we could be in for a bumpy ride!
