Rock Bottom, But Not Cut Adrift
Just like the men’s side, we haven’t started this season well at all. We sit rock bottom but we haven’t been cut adrift in the relegation zone, so it could be worse at this stage. We have been lucky Liverpool have been just as bad in the league and with that lifeline we have to use it and kick on.
The Brutal Start: Fixtures That Mask Performance
We have already played Manchester United away, Chelsea away, Arsenal at home and Tottenham away whereas I don’t think many teams can say that, so nicer games are heading our way. With the fixtures we’ve had I would have put us on two points so it’s not all doom and gloom as you may think but that doesn’t mean it has been good by any means. We faced relegation favourites Leicester City who I felt we had to beat. But respect where it’s due, Leicester City were on five points, whereas we were on zero, and we had to settle for a draw with them in the end. Liverpool are now also on one point but I see them getting a couple of points in the near future. Even after the horrid start, there are still a lot of positives around the women’s side right now and hopefully next month my article can be even more positive.
Cup Glory and the Ffion Morgan Factor
Even though the league hasn’t started too well, our cup run has been a huge positive. We sit top with one game to go and the only team to have not lost yet. The top team goes through to the quarter finals. Our remaining game in the group is Championship side Portsmouth so hopefully that will be enough to remain top. We only need one point to do so. Another positive is yet again how well our new signings have done, with the main one being Welsh star, Ffion Morgan. She has now started the last few games in the league after only playing in the League Cup and she is really starting to gel with our other attackers. With a few players returning from injury hopefully as a team we start to gel more so we can start adding points to our good performances as we don’t deserve to only have one point on the board.
The Path to Nine Points Before Christmas
With the remaining games before Christmas looking very positive, we could be in a lot better place. We could be on nine points, be in a quarter final of the League Cup and have the FA Cup to look forward to.
