Opposition View: Why Bournemouth are no longer underdogs

As the Cherries hunt for a European spot, Ellie Hartman explains how front-foot football and smart recruitment changed the script at the Vitality

What’s been the biggest catalyst behind Bournemouth’s stunning start to the campaign – Iraola’s tactics, squad depth, or pure belief?

Ellie: It’s all of it, but mostly Iraola. The man’s transformed the way we play – fearless, front-foot football with purpose. You can feel the belief running through the team. Every player knows their role and gives everything for the badge.

The Rise of Scott and Semenyo

Back to Bournemouth, how have players like Alex Scott and Antoine Semenyo evolved into genuine Premier League stars this season?

Ellie: Scott looks like he’s been running Premier League midfields for years. Calm, composed, never panics. Semenyo’s gone up another level too; Pace, power, goals, assists, the lot. They’re both the heartbeat of this side now.

Kluivert’s Consistency and Defensive Steel

Is Justin Kluivert finally delivering the consistency that once made him one of Europe’s brightest prospects?

Ellie: Absolutely. He’s matured massively. The flair’s still there, but he’s grafting too — tracking back, pressing, fighting for every ball. He finally looks settled, and you can tell he’s enjoying his football again.

Yet down on the South coast, it looks like Iraola has balanced the attacking flair with newfound defensive steel particularly from Senesi?

Ellie: He’s got the balance spot-on. We still play brave, attacking football, but the back line finally looks organised. Senesi’s leadership has been massive, and he is everywhere energy for days.

Fear at the Vitality

Has the Vitality become the hardest away ground outside the traditional top six? Ellie: Definitely. You can feel the fear in visiting teams now. The crowd’s electric, and we don’t sit back anymore. We press high, attack with intent, and teams just can’t live with it.

Dreaming of Europe

With Bournemouth above Liverpool and looking like they will be in the hunt for Europe, are fans dreaming of Champions League football or is that still too soon?

Ellie: We’re trying to keep our feet on the ground, but how can you not dream? If we’re still in the mix come February, the Vitality will be bouncing every week. Imagine Champions League nights in Bournemouth?!

Do you think Bournemouth have replaced the old “punching-above-their-weight” tag with genuine European ambitions?

Ellie: We’re not the plucky underdogs anymore. This team believes it belongs up there. The club’s structure, the recruitment it all feels built for Europe now. We’ve earned the right to dream a bit bigger.

A Sustainable Model

Are Bournemouth’s performances proof that smart recruitment and patience can still beat the Premier League’s billion-pound projects? Ellie: 100%. We’ve built something sustainable. No egos, no superstars, just a squad that fits perfectly together. Money can’t buy team spirit and Bournemouth’s got it in buckets.

How are the Cherries handling the pressure of being title outsiders instead of relegation survivors?

Ellie: Honestly? They’re loving it. Iraola keeps everyone grounded, but you can tell the players thrive under pressure now. They’ve flipped the script – we’re the hunters, not the hunted.

If Bournemouth maintain this momentum, could Iraola realistically be Manager of the Year come May?

Ellie: If he keeps us anywhere near the top four, give him the trophy. What he’s done with this group is nothing short of remarkable. He’s turned belief into reality.
