Last month our survival chances grew, we beat Leicester City away whilst also keeping a clean sheet and beat Brighton and Hove Albion at home.
Leicester City was our first away points of the season and it has caused them to be in the relegation fight and now sit bottom. Before this month the relegation was set to be between us and Liverpool and now we have brought Leicester City and Everton into the mix.
Our 3-2 comeback against Brighton didn’t just give us the three points, it also gave me belief that the club is really fighting for our survival.
We scored three goals in the last nine minutes to come from 2-0 behind to win, that isn’t a result I think I have ever seen our women’s side do.
It was also nice to see our star strikers Shakira Martinez and Viviane Asseyi score but also Ffion Morgan coming off the bench to score.
We are so used to seeing only one player score for us but we are finally scoring goals as a collection and I see this as a huge positive going forward.
FA Cup Exit Highlights League Priorities
The major downside last month was that we lost to Brighton at home in the FA Cup which now means we have been eliminated from both cups.
Since we had picked up a few points before this game, in the league, I was hoping for a stronger lineup as this is a game we can win, especially after our big comeback against them. But due to resting players and obviously putting all our priorities into survival we lost pretty easily.
January Signings Make an Instant Impact
Another plus last month was seeing how well our new signings have gelled. In a month that these signings could be the reason we stay up, we needed them to click instantly and in fairness they did.
In January we signed five players all to join our first team. These included Tuva Hansen, Katie Zelem, Ria Bose, Estelle Cascarino and Ylinn Tennebo.
All players have played for us since they signed and Zelem has already made three starts and solidified her central midfield role.
With Zelem’s experience and leadership qualities, I think she will be a huge bonus going forward.
For Hansen, coming from Bayern Munich and winning continuous trophies, she comes with a winners mentality and due to our young defence, I believe we needed that secure and experienced defender to join our back line especially with Shelina Zadorsky out injured.
But the main thing for me is how all signings have made their mark already in a short period of time, long may that continue.
Bracing for Tough Tests Ahead
After the international break, we play Manchester United at home and Arsenal away.
It’s pretty obvious we are set for zero points in them but after these games, we have a nice run so if the teams around us lose the next two as well I’ll be extremely confident that we can stay up.
