As the dust settles on a hectic transfer window, life in the Championship is delivering its trademark emotional rollercoaster.
Dropping into the second tier was always going to force a massive reset, but it has surprised me just how much of a reset it has been.
High-Profile Sales and Surprising Departures
High-profile sales of Mateus Fernandes, Crysencio Summerville, and El Hadji Malick Diouf reflect life outside the top flight and were probably expected.
But Freddie Potts’ departure for Champions League football at Club Brugge and James Ward-Prowse’s return to Southampton for next to nothing came as a surprise.
I know Nuno has seemingly never been a fan of JWP from his time managing Forest and West Ham but surely both could have played a part in a relentless Championship season where the games come thick and fast?
Off-Field Unity and Record-Breaking Attendance
Off the pitch, fan unity shines. Over 62,000 supporters packed the London Stadium against Charlton – setting a Championship attendance record and proving that we remain as massive as ever.
In fact we’re top of the attendance table – Wolves in second place have half our average attendance. This support is absolutely incredible.
Meanwhile, the Supporters’ Trust and Fan Advisory Board have acted as digital “crash test dummies” to protect supporters during new ticketing trials.
On-Pitch Mixed Signs and New Optimism
On the pitch, we have provided a mix of anxiety and encouragement. A slow start caused concern, but cup wins over Portsmouth and Southampton, combined with new arrivals like Arne Engels and Jarrod Bowen’s commitment, give us reason to dream again.
