Why Nuno faces a crucial test to keep our promotion hopes alive

After a shaky start to the season the next five matches will be absolutely crucial for our manager.

Just a few games into the season, it’s become clear that we are going to have to battle for every single point. I’d not expected the Championship to be a walk in the park, but I had hoped that for once, we’d be pleasantly surprised with a couple of early wins that took the pressure off. Instead, our first two league games reminded us how stressful life can be as a West Ham fan. I’d not been overly optimistic, but had really hoped that we could have a solid start to the season.

Picking Up League Wins and Finding Form

Despite the rocky beginning, I don’t think all is lost. We’ve started to pick up league wins and dare I say that we are finding some form. I really hope that an uplift in form will continue and we’ll stay at the top of the league table and be in a good position in January. If we’re in potential promotion spots, I can see us finding it a lot easier to strengthen our team in the January transfer window for the final push to the end of the season.

Squad Depth and Financial Expectations Under Nuno

What I do fear is that we struggle and find ourselves flapping around in the Championship. If this happens, we will have made a real mistake in the way we’ve set ourselves up this season. But at what point do you cut ties with Nuno if we’re not challenging for the top spots? For me, there’s no reason we should be mid-table or below after 10 games. We have managed to hold onto plenty of Premier League standard players. Looking at finances, we have brought in a lot of money from the sale of players and knew from the moment last season ended that there was a clear need to invest and improve squad depth. Simply put, any poor performances that are down to a weak bench seem inexcusable.

The Next Five Games as the Ultimate Benchmark

Pressure will mount on Nuno if the fans grow impatient, so the next five games will be key for him to prove himself. Personally, I have everything crossed that the first couple of games were just part of us finding our feet.
