For me, goalkeepers, more than any outfield player – and certainly more than any manager – define the various eras in West Ham’s history. Phil Parkes was brilliant, ; Allen McKnight was awful; Ferguson never quite lived up to expectations.
Supposedly, West Ham United have surprised a lot of people thus far this season. When pundits praise the Irons, they point out our strength at the back – one of the tightest defences in the country and the only Premier League team yet (at the time of writing) to concede a goal from a set piece.
One thing West Ham fans have been regularly associated with is the ability to create an amazing atmosphere both home and away but historically Upton Park was a ground that was intimidating for both travelling supporters and teams alike.
